History and Statistics for SCNATS

The South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing was founded in the late 1950s by Mrs. Carolyn Parker and Mrs. Grace Johnston of Columbia College. Since its inception, our organization has grown to a to a membership of over 125.

The chapter hosts a number of events each year including master classes with internationally renowned clinicians such as Shirley Verrett and the annual student auditions where talented young singers from around the state compete in specific categories corresponding with their level of study.

In our most recent Spring 2008 Student Auditions, over 375 student applications were submitted. Of those applications:

  • 384 students submitted applications to perform at the auditions
  • 339 students performed at the auditions (88.2% of applicants)
  • 152 students advanced to the regional level (44.8% of participants)

A complete list of the 2008 regional qualifiers and category winners is available here.
